E’ avvenuto con successo, nella giornata di sabato 14 gennaio, il lancio dei primi dieci satelliti della costellazione Iridium NEXT. A bordo di essi viaggiano i ricevitori di Aireon, la partnership multinazionale che fornirà, a partire dal 2018, un servizio di sorveglianza satellitare capace di coprire la totalità della superficie terrestre. Portati in orbita dalla base aerea di Vanderberg in California grazie ad un razzo Falcon 9 della società SpaceX di Elon Musk, i satelliti Low Earth Orbit di Iridium NEXT rappresentano il primo passo verso la creazione di una costellazione composta da 66 elementi.
Basati sulla tecnologia ADS-B già in uso in alcune aree del mondo, i ricevitori di Aireon interrogheranno gli apparati ADS-B a bordo degli aeromobili in volo, permettendo di identificarne la posizione anche nelle zone attualmente non coperte dai radar tradizionali.
Ad oggi, infatti, gli aerei non sono seguiti dai radar quando sorvolano alcune aree oceaniche, zone desertiche, o più semplicemente territori i cui stati non hanno investito sufficienti risorse per implementare le moderne tecnologie di sorveglianza. La sicurezza del volo è garantita anche in quei casi, grazie ai riporti di posizione degli aeromobili e a procedure ben codificate. Tuttavia, la sorveglianza dello spazio aereo tramite ADS-B permette di aumentare drasticamente l’efficienza del volo, permettendo rotte dirette, profili di volo ottimali ed un aumento notevole della capacità di traffico di molti spazi aerei. Inoltre, è ragionevole ipotizzare che la tecnologia ADS-B possa essere di aiuto nella ricerca del relitto in occasione di incidenti aerei, quali ad esempio il volo Air France 447 del 2009, o il più recente caso del volo Malaysian 370, tuttora irrisolto.
Aireon è una partnership tra la società Iridium Communications e alcuni fornitori di servizi della navigazione aerea – o ANSP: Air Navigation Service Providers – di diversi paesi del mondo. Tra questi vale la pena citare l’italiana ENAV, detentrice del 12,5% delle quote.
