Pop Quiz: How Many Dreamliners Does Boeing Have To Deliver To Turn a Profit?

If you can remember back that far, Boeing’s (BA) 787 Dreamliner started as a much-celebrated advance, a wide-body, fuel-efficient jet. Unfortunately, the program has been awfully slow going.

The Dreamliner was supposed to start flying in 2007, but delays have become the norm and have created opportunity for airlines to cancel their orders. Most recently, Qantas Airways cancelled an order for 35 of the planes.

Boeing seems to be moving forward. The first model was delivered to All Nippon Airways and stayed flying last fall. This summer, United (UAL) threw a web party when Boeing finally rolled the first Dreamliner out of the paint hangar.

But customers originally placed more than 1,000 orders and have cancelled 217 of those. Boeing’s total orders now: 824. And every delay and cancelled order means it takes longer for Boeing to turn a profit. According to the Wall Street Journal, Boeing needs to ship 1,100 of the planes in order to break even.

Sheesh, this could take a while.

Lan receives first 787

By: GHIM-LAY YEO SEATTLE

Chile's LAN has received its first Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, becoming the first operator of the aircraft in the Americas and the fourth airline to receive it.
The airline's chief executive Ignacio Cueto formally accepted the aircraft today in a ceremony at the Future of Flight Museum near Boeing's facilities in Everett.

Calling it a milestone for the carrier, Cueto says the aircraft will "make it possible for us to cover greater distances".
LAN's first 787 is configured with 30 business class seats and 217 economy class seats.

The cabin interior, which will feature a full lie-flat seat in business class, will also be a feature on LAN's new 767 deliveries, says LAN.
The carrier will be the first 787 operator to offer an integrated in-flight entertainment solution, the Panasonic Avionics eX2. Featuring a touch-screen monitor, it will allow passengers to stream their content from their personal devices onto the screen.

The airline has orders for 32 787s, comprising 22 787-8s and 10 -9s. It plans to operate the aircraft to Buenos Aires, Lima, Los Angeles, Madrid and Frankfurt.

LAN cites widebody fleet flexibility with 787

By: GHIM-LAY YEO SEATTLE

Chile's LAN does not rule out deploying its new Boeing 787 to the fleet of Brazil's TAM, which it recently closed a merger with.
The airline's chief executive Ignacio Cueto says that the carrier will make decisions in the coming months on where to operate the aircraft, besides the initial destinations it has named.
"We have to think about Brazil," says Cueto. Besides the 787, the merged LATAM also expects to add Airbus A350s to its fleet in the coming years. TAM has 27 Airbus A350s on order, comprising 17 A350-900s and 10 A350-800s. The merged carrier would have to plan on where to deploy the new aircraft, says Cueto.
LAN, which received its first 787-8 today, will receive another two aircraft by end-2012. It will add another two 787-8s in 2013 and seven more in 2014. LAN has 32 787s on order, comprising 22 -8s and 10 -9s.
Its first 787-9 will arrive in early 2015, says Cueto, who says the timeline was affirmed by Boeing executives in meetings this week. The airline will have all 32 787s join its fleet in the next 10 years.
