We are the first to fly the Boeing 787 nonstop from Brazil to the U.S. with the launch of our daily 787-8 service from GRU (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to IAH, which began April 8. We currently operate the route using Boeing 777s but regularly review our fleet decisions and move aircraft around our network based on changing market conditions.
The 787-8 has 219 seats – 36 lie-flat seats in United BusinessFirst and 183 seats in United Economy, including 70 Economy Plus extra-legroom seats.
We currently fly the 787 on 10 other routes: DEN-NRT, LAX-NRT, LAX-MEL (Melbourne, Australia), LAX-PVG (Shanghai, China), IAH-LOS (Lagos, Nigeria), IAH-LHR (London Heathrow), IAH-DEN, IAH-SFO, SFO-CTU (Chengdu, China) and SFO-KIX (Osaka, Japan).

Giorni fa ho visto a FRA, dall'autostrada che costeggia una via di rullaggio sopraelevata, un B787-8 UA appena atterrato. M'e' cascata la mascella!

Air Europa launches first Dreamliner flight in Madrid-Miami route

Air Europa, Spain’s largest privately-owned airline, this week inaugurated its first scheduled flight with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which will now operate its Madrid-Miami route.

This route is currently operating five times a week, although it will become a daily flight as of this July.

The Dreamliner is Boeing’s latest model, and shortens the travelling time on this route by 40 minutes, as well as offering a new option for passengers between the business and tourist classes: Premium Economy.

The new Air Europa plane flying to Miami has 252 seats, 18 of which are business class - fully convertible into beds- and 21 are the new Premium Economy class.

Air Europa will integrate eight new Dreamliners into its fleet over the next two years with the first four by the end of 2016.

With the announcement that it has placed an order for an additional 14 Dreamliners, the airline will have a total of 22 Dreamliners all operational by 2022 completely replacing its long haul fleet of A330’s with the state of the art aircraft.

Colin Stewart, UK general manager, Air Europa, said: “The introduction of the Dreamliner on our Miami route is just the start for us, our investment of over $3.5billion is a real game changer allowing us to deliver the very best product in the sky while continuing to offer exceptional customer service and support to our passengers.”

Boeing 787 unit loss declines, but deferred costs rise

Cost control on the Boeing 787 programme showed some improvement on a unit basis in the first quarter, but the company remains far from break-even.
If deferred production, unamortised tooling and other costs are factored in, Boeing lost an average of $30 million on each of the 30 787s delivered in the first quarter.

That represented an 11% decline from a $34 million unit loss on each of the 35 787s delivered in the fourth quarter of last year.

Boeing still plans to reach break-even on a unit basis by the end of this year on the 787 programme.

“The programme continues to make improvements on unit costs,” Greg Smith, Boeing’s executive vice-president and chief financial officer, said in a first quarter earnings call with analysts on 22 April. “We’ve still got a long way to go, but we’re making a lot of progess.”

he unit accounting losses on each 787 do not show up directly on Boeing’s quarterly balance sheet.

Instead, Boeing’s programme accounting method defines a block 1,300 aircraft expected to be delivered and builds in a predetermined cost and operating margin for each aircraft delivered within the block.

Actual losses on each aircraft delivered so far are added to the programme’s deferred production cost. Boeing also has a separate line item for unamortised tooling and other costs.

The combined deferred production and amortised tooling costs rose by $905 million in the first quarter to exceed $30 billion.

Although overall costs are still rising, the first quarter represented the first three-month period that the figure was held under $1 billion since Boeing started delivery 787s in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The unit cost improvement in the first quarter could have been greater if not for supply chain problems. Zodiac Aerospace has fallen behind on deliveries of premium cabin seating. GE Aviation also discovered a quality problem with a component that delayed shipments of 29 GEnx engines. Both issues are expected to be resolved in the second quarter.

“We do have a high confidence in the plan to resolve” the Zodiac seat issues, says Boeing chief executive and chairman James McNerney. “”It’s not going to disrupt our production plans.”

Sarà anche un progetto interamente nuovo che porterà benefici per decenni, ma leggere di simili cifre perse solo per i ritardi fa comunque impressione.

FAA warns that 787s can lose all electrical power in certain circumstances

Nearly four years the Boeing 787 Dreamliner entered commercial service, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is moving to combat a potentially dangerous software glitch that can cause a total loss of electrical power that would endanger the aircraft.

Jon Ostrower, an aviation journalist at The Wall Street Journal, comments: A glitch that only shows up after 8 months, yes. But Boeing was telling airlines to keep their 787s powered to avoid nuisance messages.

United Continental, the largest 787 operator in the U.S. and an early customer for the jet, last year replaced many ground power units where the aircraft was operating, including its Houston hub. The earlier units, which sit at the gates and connect to the power-hungry aircraft, were unexpectedly switching off, causing a loss of power on the aircraft. When the aircraft was repowered, nuisance messages would have to be cleared before a flight could be operated.

Boeing and United said that software and hardware changes to the aircraft have now significantly reduced those messages.

But previously, United said its ground crews would leave a small onboard generator, known as the auxiliary power unit, running as an “alternate power source for [the 787] to ensure stable electrical power while on the ground.”
