Oggi taglio del nastro a FCO

16 novembre 2016

THAI boosts European links with Phuket
New Frankfurt flight launches with additional services to follow

Thai Airways has unveiled a series of new flights for its 2016-17 winter schedule, including new services direct between Phuket and Europe.

This week, the national carrier launched a new direct route connecting Phuket with Frankfurt, enabling German holidaymakers to head straight to the popular resort island. This flight will operate three times a week using a Boeing 777 aircraft, and continues onwards between Phuket and Bangkok.

In addition, THAI will increase the frequency of its seasonal Phuket-Copenhagen and Phuket-Stockholm routes to two flights per week each from 9 and 10 December respectively. These services are also operated using a B777.

The national carrier has also added more flights between Europe and Bangkok; the previously suspended Moscow route will resume on 15 December with four weekly B777 flights, and the key Bangkok-London route has increased from 12 to 14 weekly flights, including daily Airbus A380 services.

THAI’s Bangkok-Oslo service has gone daily (up from five weekly flights) and one more weekly flight has been added to the Brussels route, taking it to four weekly flights.

Finally, THAI has deployed its brand new A350 to Italy, including four flights per week to Rome and three per week to Milan.

Thai Airways wants to increase capacity on Europe routes
Xinyi Liang-Pholsena, reporting from ITB Berlin, Berlin, March 10, 2017

Thai Airways International (THAI) intends to increase capacity to Europe where it already boasts 12 direct connections.

The airline is seeing “very strong” Europe performance and load factors, according to THAI’s vice president, sales department, Bryan Banston, who added that the carrier finally sprung back from the black in 2016, prompting further confidence in its business outlook this year.

“One of our key strategies is to grow European routes to daily in the short term. These include Brussels, Milan, Rome and Moscow,” he told TTG Asia.

Besides doubling its Frankfurt and London services to double daily in late 2015, the airline’s resumption of four-times weekly services to Moscow in December 2016 has already witnessed “booming” traffic from Russia, according to Banston.

Meanwhile, the recent delivery of two Airbus A350-900XWBs has also enabled THAI to pursue European capacity growth by deploying the new widebody aircraft on the Milan and Rome routes.

Said Banston: “The A350 has proven itself well in Italy, and we expect it to do well in Europe.”

Furthermore, THAI is also leveraging its relationships with Star Alliance member airlines in Europe, particularly in markets like the Netherlands and Spain where it doesn’t have direct connections yet, said Banston.

The airline has also revealed clear ambitions to position itself as a network carrier in South-east Asia through its Bangkok hub. “We see good growth in network selling,” said Banston. “We also see opportunities to focus on our network to move passengers beyond Bangkok to other parts of South-east Asia, Asia and Australia.”

Regional subsidiary Thai Smile will hence play an integral role to generate new feed for THAI’s longhaul network, as it has fallen behind competitors in terms of regional network development in recent years. For instance, it has identified Europe to be a good source for Thai Smile’s Kota Kinabalu-Bangkok service starting the end of this month.

Banston also sees opportunities in driving European passenger demand into secondary destinations in Thailand like Phuket, where it recently added a Frankfurt-Phuket link in November 2016.

When asked if the aggressive competition of the Gulf airlines on the Europe-Asia market poses any threat, Banston said: “THAI’s edge lies in our non-stop operations, which comprise one long and short sector. Premium and corporate passengers prefer such arrangements than to have the leg broken up into two.”

Thai Airways sinks to 1H loss on weak 2Q performance

A weaker second-quarter performance has dealt a setback to Thai Airways’ financial turnaround efforts, dragging the carrier into the red for the first half of the year.
The airline reported a net loss of THB5.2 billion ($156.6 million) for the three months through June 30, which was 79% higher than the THB2.9 billion loss in the same period a year earlier. This was enough to outweigh its first-quarter profit, and tip the airline into a THB2 billion loss for the first six months of the year. This is a reversal from a THB3.1 billion profit in 2016.
Thai is partway through a multi-year turnaround plan. In 2016, the airline managed to return to the black with a slim THB47 million profit, versus a THB13 billion loss in 2015. The latest results will make it more difficult for the airline to build on last year’s improvement.
Despite the higher net loss, the carrier managed to reduce its 2Q operating loss by 13.5% to THB1.5 billion. However, it was also faced with more special items, such as losses from foreign exchange shifts and the dilution of its ownership share in Nok Air.
Other factors contributing to the 2Q net loss were a 20% year-over-year increase in fuel prices, and a 10.9% drop in passenger yield. The airline achieved good demand in the quarter, with traffic up 21.9% on a 7.1% capacity increase. Second-quarter revenue rose 9.6%. Load factor was up 9.5 points to 78.5%, which the carrier said was its highest in 10 years.
Thai increased its fleet to 97 aircraft by June 30, thanks to the delivery of two Airbus A350s and no retirements. The total includes the 20 A320s operated by subsidiary Thai Smile. During the second half of 2017, Thai is scheduled to take delivery of five new aircraft—three A350s and two Boeing 787-9s. It will also phase out two leased Airbus A330-300s during this period. ATW
