ANALYSIS: Covid-19 poses threats and opportunities for EasyJet

All carriers have seen their business models upended by the coronavirus. But for UK-based EasyJet, the crisis has also heralded an almighty row about who controls the company, and how it will recover from here.
The company's immediate problems are the same as for all airlines across the world, and particularly in Europe – grounded fleets, travel restrictions and economic recession.
It has already taken measures to reduce its size, partly because of shareholder pressure from its largest shareholder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, notes director of JLS Aviation John Strickland. "[EasyJet] will have to consolidate to airports where it maintains important number one or two positions. It doesn't have any other choice," he recently told FlightGlobal.
This would enable the company to deliver significant cost savings at a time when cash is sparse. It will also signify a wider industry shift to operating routes that have clear profitability.
But EasyJet stands apart from some of its low-cost rivals because of its slightly premium positioning in the market. Reflecting this, it has a relatively high proportion of business travellers compared with its competitors.
This could impact the company not only in the short term, as companies refrain from allowing employees to travel amid fears of contracting Covid-19, but also in the longer term if the crisis facilitates a broader shift to more virtual meetings, as many expect.
Appealing to the squeezed middle of the market could also be an uncomfortable position for the carrier, which has softer margins and cash-flow generation than its peers, says Mark Manduca, an aviation analyst at Citi.
"In any recession, if you want in any industry to own a company, you always go with the lower-cost producer. You do not go with the middle-cost producer, because they don't represent hyper-premium, and they don't represent hyper-low-cost.”
The risk for EasyJet, Manduca believes, is that with a cash burn rate of around £2.2 billion ($2.7 billion) over six months, it could be forced to raise £700 million to £1 billion in liquidity over the summer.
Given that EasyJet has a market capitalisation of around £2 billion and net debt at around the same level, with EBITA coming in at well below £1 billion even in a good year, "net debt to EBITDA is going to be skyward of four, five, six times potentially", a level at which it could weigh on the carrier's performance. "Remember, paying down debt is the problem here, just taking out another loan isn't going to solve the issue," he explains.
The carrier could look to raise cash through a rights issue, but that may run into difficulties given its tensions with Haji-Ioannou. "Stelios obviously owns more than 30% of the stock, so whenever a third of your base starts to wrangle at the time when you need money, it is not the best of situations," Manduca tells Cirium.
Haji-Ioannou has previously said that he will not back a rights issue unless EasyJet cancels a £4.5 billion aircraft order with Airbus. In a bizarre twist, he has even offered a £5 million reward to anyone who provides "useful information" leading to the cancellation of the order.
The problem for EasyJet is that the longer the carrier waits to raise cash, with the newsflow around airlines deteriorating, lockdowns extending, and cash-burn increasing, the trickier it may find it to raise cash on favourable terms.
On the other side of the coin, the crisis also presents EasyJet with opportunities.
Credit Suisse highlights that the carrier could revamp its network and focus on its most profitable routes, cutting away the parts of its network that are underperforming. This could help it reduce its winter losses and continue its focus on using big data to improve yields.
Despite forecasting a 92% fall in second-half passenger numbers, the bank holds an "outperform" rating on the airline's stock, noting that “we continue to see [EasyJet] as well positioned to navigate the crisis, and achieve structural gains as competitors suffer more".
EasyJet also has a strong asset base in terms of slots, because it operates in more capacity-constrained airports, with a particular focus on London.
Virgin Atlantic is shifting operations from Gatwick and British Airways is believed to be considering a similar move, while Norwegian, also a strong player at the south London airport, has been under severe financial pressure.
This would put EasyJet in a strong position to grab market share once the recovery begins, HSBC argues.
"We see EasyJet as well placed to gain market share as flying recovers," says the bank. "We think its holidays offering will be well placed to gain market share in winter 2020-21 and into summer 2021, as other established tour operators may be struggling financially and destination hotels will be keen for new counterparties."
Counter to Citi, HSBC believes EasyJet is in a strong liquidity position, noting that it has accessed £600 million of UK government financial assistance and has deferred delivery on 24 jets. It also does not see the airline's Airbus order as being an irresponsible use of capex, noting that it will confer "considerable fleet flexibility, which is rightly the key focus".
Some clarity for the company may come as soon as 22 May, when shareholders will take part in an extraordinary general meeting called by Haji-Ioannou. He is seeking the removal of four directors, including chief executive Johan Lundgren and finance director Andrew Findlay.
EasyJet highlights that proxy advisory services ISS, Glass Lewis and PIRC have recommended that shareholders vote against Haji-Ioannou's proposals later this month. It also says it has received letters stating support from shareholders representing 15% of its register, something that “underscores the strength of the actions taken to date by the board and management to safeguard the financial and operational stability of the airline”, says Lundgren.
He continues: “We are facing an important moment in our history at EasyJet and need a strong team to navigate the uncharted water ahead. Every voice and vote counts in deciding the future of this business. We urge all shareholders to heed the independent advice of these bodies and VOTE AGAINST the proposed resolutions.”
Whichever way the vote goes, it is unlikely to heal the rift that has clearly opened up between the company and Haji-Ioannou.
Further public conflict between the parties seems likely, which at the very least will be a distraction to management at a crucial time for the company's future.
"To pretend that this is all going to just wash away when there's obviously been a lot of words said on both sides is just not going to happen," says Manduca.

Stesso problema, ho provato stamane.
https://italiavola.com/2020/05/15/easyjet-dal-1-giugno-voli-in-italia-a-regime-ridotto/

EasyJet has revealed that the personal information of 9 million customers was accessed in a “highly sophisticated” cyber-attack on the airline.

The company on Tuesday disclosed that email addresses and travel details were accessed and said it will contact all of the customers affected.

Of the 9 million people affected, 2,208 had credit card details stolen, easyJet said in a statement to the stock market

A small number of mainly domestic flights, from 21 European airports will restart from 15 June

This includes many UK domestic routes, including from London Gatwick, Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Belfast, and Isle of Man.

easyJet is introducing new measures to help ensure safety and wellbeing including enhanced aircraft cleaning and disinfection and requirement for passengers and crew to wear masks.

easyJet has today announced that it will resume some flights on 15 June. Services will be operating from London Gatwick, Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Belfast, and Isle of Man in the UK. In addition, flying will resume in France from Nice, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes, Lyon and Lille, as well as from Geneva in Switzerland, Lisbon and Porto in Portugal, and Barcelona in Spain.

Flying will principally be on domestic routes alongside a minimal number of international routes. The airline expects to increase flying as customer demand continues to build and restrictions are relaxed. During the lockdown period the fleet has been grounded the aircraft have been maintained in a flight ready condition to enable the airline to resume flights quickly at the right time.

A new range of additional measures will be in place to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of all customers and crew onboard. These include enhanced aircraft disinfection for easyJet aircraft; customers, cabin and ground crew will be required to wear masks; there will also initially be no food service onboard flights, all of which operate on a short-haul network.

The measures have been implemented in consultation with aviation authorities ICAO and EASA, and in line with relevant national authorities and medical advice through the airline’s chief medical adviser.

Johan Lundgren, CEO of easyJet, commented:

“I am really pleased that we will be returning to some flying in the middle of June. These are small and carefully planned steps that we are taking to resume operations. We will continue to closely monitor the situation across Europe so that when more restrictions are lifted the schedule will continue to build over time to match demand while also ensuring we are operating efficiently and on routes that our customers want to fly.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew remains our highest priority which is why we are implementing a number of measures enhancing safety at each part of the journey from disinfecting the aircraft to requiring customers and crew to wear masks. These measures will remain in place for as long as is needed to ensure customers and crew are able to fly safely as the world continues to recover from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We look forward to welcoming our customers back onboard in June.”

The airline has also today released a video outlining the new measures that will be in place for customers’ wellbeing for when they next travel. The video can be viewed here: https://vimeo.com/420797408/e0c5ccb978.

NEW MEASURES:

AIRCRAFT CLEANING:

The additional cleaning and disinfection procedures for aircraft cabins are on top of an existing daily aircraft cleaning schedule. Every aircraft will be subject to a daily disinfection process which provides surface protection from viruses that lasts for at least 24 hours.

ON BOARD MEASURES:

All passengers and crew will be required to wear masks onboard at all times. Initially when flights restart, the Bistro and Boutique service will not be available. Furthermore, all flights will be equipped with spare sanitary equipment including masks, gloves and hand sanitiser to ensure these are available to customers and crew at all times onboard, if required. easyJet’s aircraft are already fitted with state of art filtration technology. High efficiency particle arresting filters filter 99.97% of airborne contaminants in the cabin, including viruses and bacteria. These filters are the same as those used in hospitals and through them the cabin air gets replaced every 3-4 minutes.

AIRPORT MEASURES:

To protect customers and ground crew in the airport, customers will be able to use our automated bag drop to check in their hold luggage and screens will be in place at our check in desks and at airports where auto bag drop is not available. Ground crew and cabin will not handle any customer documents during boarding so customers will be asked to present and scan their own documents. easyJet already encourages all customers to check in online and download their boarding pass onto their smart phone or to print their own boarding passes before arriving at the airport. Our ground crew will also wear gloves and masks at all times when transporting customer luggage to and from the aircraft.

Further recommendations for airports indicate there may also be measures in places at airports such as wearing masks, self-declaration health forms to be completed ahead of departure, and temperature screening. The airline is working with all airports where it operates to understand what measures will be in place to protect customers.

SOCIAL DISTANCING:

Customers will be able to practice social distancing in the airports, at gates and during boarding. Onboard, and where possible, crew will invite customers to sit at distance from customers not in their party where seats are available.

easyJet will continue to work with the relevant national authorities to review and assess what measures are required in the longer term.

Three big easyJet shareholders back management in dispute with Haji-Ioannou[/h]

LONDON (Reuters) - Three investors in easyJet (EZJ.L) have thrown their weight behind the British airline’s management in their battle with the founder and biggest shareholder Stelios Haji-Ioannou over a 4.5 billion pound plane order.

The dispute is due to come to a head on May 22 when the results of an investor vote on whether to remove easyJet’s chief executive, chairman, chief financial officer and another director will be made public.

The vote, forced by Haji-Ioannou, is a proxy vote on management’s strategy to still buy more planes from Airbus (AIR.PA), one of many areas of broader corporate conflict sparked by a race to save cash during the pandemic.

Haji-Ioannou, whose family own just over a third of the stock, wants the airline to scrap the plan to buy 107 new planes, arguing that the coronavirus pandemic means the carrier cannot afford them and they won’t be needed.

INVESCO, which according to Refinitiv data owns 10% of easyJet’s shares and is its No.2 shareholder; Ninety One UK Limited, which has 5.2% and is No.3 on the list plus Phoenix Asset Management, with 3.3% and the fifth-biggest, all said they were backing management in the vote.

To win the votes, Haji-Ioannou’s resolutions need backing from over 50% of the shares voted.

EasyJet has agreed to defer the delivery of 24 of the new aircraft, but its chairman John Barton says it needs to stick with the order to modernise its fleet and because any termination would be costly. He has added that removing directors at this time would be “damaging and destabilising”.

EasyJet published the investor letters supporting its management on its website.
