Prosecutor to consider case against Superjet crash captain

Russia’s prosecutor general is to consider the case of an Aeroflot captain indicted over last year’s fatal Sukhoi Superjet 100 landing accident at Moscow Sheremetyevo.
The federal Investigative Committee says it has completed its criminal probe into the 5 May 2019 accident during which the aircraft returned to the airport after a lightning strike.
It bounced on touchdown, resulting in a landing-gear collapse and a fire which engulfed the aft fuselage. Only 37 of the 78 occupants survived the blaze.
The Investigative Committee says it has collected “sufficient evidence” in the case and has forwarded the information to the prosecutor general, which will decide on proceeding with the indictment.
Examination of the aircraft’s flight recorders, it states, found that the Superjet “adequately responded” to the pilot’s control inputs.
“This information refutes the accused’s claim of a possible aircraft malfunction,” it adds. The captain has been accused of causing death by negligence through violation of established rules and procedures, leading to the destruction of the aircraft.

"Captain of Aeroflot Flight 1492 that crash landed at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport in 2019 sentenced to six years in prison.
The Sukhoi Superjet 100 suffered an electrical failure after being struck by lightning on departure from the airport. On landing the aircraft bounced and touched down hard, causing the landing gear to collapse, fuel to spill out of the wings, and a fire to erupt.
Forty passengers and the flight attendant (21-year-old Maksim Moiseev) seated in the rear of the aircraft were killed. One crew member and two passengers sustained serious injuries, and three crew members and four passengers minor injuries."

“After the decision was made to return to the airport of departure, [Evdokimov] made, without observing the procedure for operating the aircraft, a very rough landing, allowing the aircraft to ‘bounce’,” the prosecutor’s office said.

“As a result, the main landing gear collapsed and the aircraft structure was destroyed with a spill and ignition of the fuel,” the office said.
Evdokimov was charged in 2019 with violating traffic safety rules resulting in the negligent death of two or more people. In addition to his prison sentence, Evdokimov is banned from operating aircraft for three years. He pleaded not guilty, Interfax reported. It was not immediately clear if he intended to appeal.

The aircraft was owned by VEB-Leasing Joint-Stock Company, the prosecutor’s office said.

Experts have warned of safety risks as Russian airlines, including state-controlled Aeroflot, are stripping jetliners to secure parts they can no longer buy due to Western sanctions."
