Hi gents,
a military ceremony set the scene for the hand-over of the Eurofighter Typhoon in an air-to-ground role. The Fighter Bomber Wing (Jagdbombergeschwader) 31 "Boelcke" is the first unit within the German Air Force flying this type of aircraft.
During the ceremony 4 Eurofighter production aircraft with the tactical numbers 30+24 , 30+23 , 31+16 and 31+17 were then handed over to the German Air Force and will serve on active duty with Fighter Bomber Wing (Jagdbombergeschwader) 31 "Boelcke" at Nörvenich Airbase near Colognein North Rhine Westphalia.
The last operational Tornado IDS of the JaboG 31 will be flown out June 30,2010.
The JaboG 31 “Boelcke” is the first Luftwaffe unit to use the Eurofighter Typhoon in an air-to-ground role. The Wing’s aircraft – currently running initial operations in cooperation with Training Fighter Wing 73 “Steinhoff” – is expected to be fully operational with all weather GBU-48 laser-guided bombs and the Laser Designator Pod by 2012.
The Fighter Bomber Wing 31 “Boelcke” is the third German Air Force Squadron equipped with the Eurofighter Typhoon. Fighter Wing 73 “Steinhoff” based in Laage-Rostock, in northern Germany, received its first aircraft in May 2004 and the Fighter Wing 74 in Neuburg –Donau, based in southern Germany, in July 2006.
The first Eurofighter Typhoon was piloted by the Wing Commander of the JaboG31 "Boelcke", Colonel Gerhartz himself.
