United Airlines slightly improves schedules on select summer 2024 transatlantic routes

October 10, 2023
In the past few days, United Airlines has pushed through a number of updates to its schedules which have seen the airline make (mostly) positive changes to a number of the transatlantic routes that it plans to operate during summer 2024.
In most cases these changes see seasonal routes returning earlier than expected, but in some cases we’re seeing an aircraft change as well.
Chicago O’Hare – Barcelona
As has been planned for a while, this seasonal route will return on 23 May 2024 but instead of being served by a Boeing 787-8, this route will be operated by the larger 787-10 aircraft.
UA769 ORD 21:10 – 12:45+1 day BCN (Daily)
UA770 BCN 14:50 – 17:35 ORD (Daily)
The aircraft change means that each flight will offer at least 8 more Business Class seats than was originally expected.
Chicago O’Hare – Edinburgh
No major changes on this route but it may be worth noting that this seasonal route is returning on 2 May 2024 (one day earlier than originally planned) and will be operated by a Boeing 757.
UA118 ORD 18:45 – 08:25+1 day EDI (Daily)
UA119 EDI 11:30 – 14:00 ORD (Daily)
Given that the schedule change means that two extra flights have been added, a little bit more award availability may have been released.
Newark – Athens
United is bringing back this seasonal route on 30 March 2024 and will offer a daily service using a Boeing 787-10 aircraft.
UA124 EWR 17:40 – 10:10+1 day ATH (Daily)
UA125 ATH 12:25 – 16:00 EWR (Daily)
Originally, this route was not expected to return until 4 April 2024 and a daily service was not expected on this route until 6 May 2024, so it’s possible that award seats that were not available a few days ago may be available now.
Newark – Dublin
United operates a daily service between Newark and Dublin during the winter season and was originally scheduled to bring back the second daily flight (for the summer season) on 27 April 2024.
The second daily flight will now come back into service earlier than originally planned (on 30 March 2024) and the schedule should then look like this:
UA23 EWR 19:20 – 07:05+1 day DUB (Daily)
UA317 EWR 21:50 – 09:45+1 day DUB (Daily)
UA22 DUB 09:20 – 11:30 EWR (Daily)
UA316 DUB 13:35 – 16:10 EWR (Daily)
UA22/23 will be operated by a Boeing 767-400 while UA316/317 will be operated by a Boeing 757.
Newark – Naples
This route is returning on 3 May 2024 with a 167-seater 767-300ER replacing the 203-seater 767-300ER that was originally scheduled. On the one hand this will see less seats available while on the other, it signals the introduction of the Premium Economy cabin on this route.
Also, the second daily flight that was due to come in from 21 June will now be launching considerably earlier – 23 May 2024.
Once the second daily service is operating, this is what the schedule is expected to look like:
UA964 EWR 17:10 – 07:55+1 day NAP (Daily)
UA966 EWR 22:15 – 13:00+1 day NAP (Daily)
UA965 NAP 09:55 – 14:00 EWR (Daily)
UA967 NAP 15:00 – 19:05 EWR (Daily)
Both flight pairs are set be operated by 167-seat 767-300ER aircraft featuring a Premium Economy cabin.
Newark – Paris CDG
This is a route that United Airlines operated daily with a Boeing 777 during the winter season and with two daily flights in the summer season.
For summer 2024, United’s second daily flight is now scheduled to return from 10 March and not 3 May 2024 as originally planned, and a Boeing 787-10 will be taking over the year-round route from 29 March.
UA57 EWR 18:30 – 07:45+1 day CDG (Daily)
UA54 EWR 21:25 – 10:55+1 day CDG (Daily)
UA56 CDG 09:45 – 11:55 EWR (Daily)
UA55 CDG 13:10 – 15:20 EWR (Daily)
UA56/57 are the year-round flights while UA54/55 are the seasonal flights which are set to be operated by a 767-300ER aircraft.
Newark – Shannon
There’s a little bit of bad news on this route but nothing major – this seasonal daily service will now return from 12 April 2024 and not from 5 April 2024 as originally scheduled.
UA976 EWR 23:05 – 10:30+1 day SNN (Daily)
UA977 SNN 12:30 – 14:60 EWR (Daily)
Anyone booked to fly on this route between 5 April and 11 April 2024 and who has not been contacted by United, should check their reservations and get in contact with the airline asap.
San Francisco – Zurich
No major changes on this route but it may be worth noting that this seasonal route is returning on 2 May 2024 (one day earlier than originally planned – just like the Chicago-Edinburgh route) and will be operated by a Boeing 757.
UA44 SFO 14:00– 10:20+1 day ZRH (Daily)
UA45 ZRH 13:35 – 16:30 SFO (Daily)
Given that the schedule change means that two extra flights have been added, a little bit more award availability may have been released.
Washington Dulles – Athens
Another route where the update isn’t exactly major – this seasonal service will now return on 14 April instead of on 3 May 2024.
UA982 IAD 17:10 – 09:55+1 day ATH (Daily)
UA983 ATH 11:45 – 15:45 IAD (Daily)
This route is scheduled to be operated by a United Airlines 787-8.
Washington Dulles – Paris CDG
United Airlines operates a daily service on this route for most of the year but for part of the summer season, a second service is added.
This year, the second daily service will be returning a little earlier than expected (23 May instead of 31 May 2024) but it will be operated by a Boeing 767-300ER instead of a Boeing 787-8 (as originally planned).
UA915 IAD 17:20 – 06:55+1 day CDG (Daily)
UA330 IAD 22:45 – 12:35+1 day CDG (Daily)
UA914 CDG 12:25 – 14:45 IAD (Daily)
UA331 CDG 17:00 – 19:45 IAD (Daily)
UA914/915 represent the year-round service operated by a Boeing 777 aircraft while UA 330/331 represent the seasonal service operated by a Boeing 767 aircraft.
Bottom line
A few changes have been put through United’s summer schedule on select transatlantic routes. On some of routes we’re seeing seasonal services return earlier than expected (which may mean that more award availability has opened up), and on some routes we’re seeing aircraft changes (which may mean that people with existing reservations will need to reselect their seats) so if any of these changes may affect your plans, now’s the time to take action.
