BRUXELLES – Probabilmente già da quest’anno, IAG lancerà un nuovo servizio low-cost di voli a lungo raggio da Barcellona, con destinazioni in Nord e Sud America, e in Asia. O almeno questo è quello che ha fatto intendere Willie Walsh, l’Amministratore Delegato della holding cui fanno riferimento British Airways, Iberia, Vueling, e Aer Lingus.
L’idea del low cost di lungo raggio sembra ormai un refrain nel trasporto aereo europeo, tra i periodici annunci (sempre puntualmente smentiti) da parte di Ryanair, e le molto più concrete azioni avviate da Norwegian. A questi sembra dunque doversi aggiungere ora anche IAG, il colosso che raggruppa BA e IB, che al contrario dei colleghi irlandesi sembra tuttavia avere un piano più preciso.
A ben cercare, la notizia non è una novità esclusiva, visto che voci in questo senso circolavano già da tempo. Quelle che Walsh ha pronunciato due giorni fa durante il primo compleanno di Airlines 4 Europe (A4E) – il “sindacato” europeo delle compagnie aeree – sono dunque una importante conferma.
Di preciso si sa ancora poco, ma alcuni dettagli sono già stati svelati. A partire da quello che sarebbe l’hub di riferimento per questo nuovo progetto, e cioè lo scalo El Prat di Barcellona indicato dallo stesso Walsh come ideale. Per quanto riguarda la compagnia che dovrebbe andare materialmente a operare i voli, Walsh ha smentito che si tratti di Vueling, a cui semmai sarebbe affidato il compito di feeder. Più accreditata è invece la tesi Aer Lingus, vettore irlandese che già opera nel lungo raggio e il cui marchio vanta una buona riconoscibilità nel mercato americano, anche se non è esclusa del tutto l’idea che si possa ricorrere ad un nuovo marchio apposito. Oltre all’aeroporto di partenza, l’unica altra certezza è l’aeromobile con cui verranno operati i voli: l’Airbus A330.
