We operate our first 787-9 revenue flight: Flight 1086 departed IAH at 2:40 p.m. on Monday on its way to LAX, marking the first revenue flight for our new Boeing 787-9.
The aircraft (#950), a stretched version of the 787-8, will fly primarily between IAH and LAX prior to the launch of our LAX-MEL (Melbourne, Australia) service in late October. It will also operate NFL charter flights during its domestic flying phase.
The 787-9’s fuselage is 20 feet longer than the 787-8’s, enabling us to fly more than 30 additional customers. The aircraft’s range is up to 350 miles further than the 787-8’s, with the same exceptional environmental performance, including up to 20 percent less fuel burn per seat and up to 20 percent fewer emissions than similarly sized aircraft.
Earlier this month we became the first North American carrier to take delivery of the Boeing 787-9. We have 25 more 787-9s on order, plus 27 787-10s and one more 787-8, for a total 787 fleet of 65.

Virgin Atlantic Close to Decision on Boosting Dreamliner Order

Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. said it’s close to firming up an order for five more Boeing Co. (BA) 787s as the carrier pursues a fleet upgrade to phase out older jets.

Virgin Atlantic is “examining” options it holds on five Dreamliners with an update likely “very soon,” the Crawley, England-based company said in an e-mailed response to questions.

Richard Branson’s long-haul airline already has orders for 16 787-9s, and will become the first European operator of the variant when flights begin next month. The carrier is also interested in the larger 787-10, the billionaire said in May.

Chief Executive Officer Craig Kreeger is seeking to return Virgin to profit by the end of this year after taking over in February 2013, a month after Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) agreed to buy a 49 percent stake as part of a revenue-sharing alliance.

Relatively inefficient Airbus Group NV (AIR) A340-300s are due to exit by the end of February, while two A340-600s are slated to be retired at the start of the year. The last five 747-400s at London Heathrow airport will leave between next September and July 2016, with Virgin also looking to replace 747s around which the London Gatwick long-haul leisure arm is based.

Royal Air Maroc (AT, Casablanca Int'l) has outlined its provisional B787-8 timetable with delivery of its first of four airframes on order from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) due before year-end. ch-aviation timetable data shows that for the purposes of crew training, the Moroccan national carrier will deploy the twinjet on daily Casablanca Int'l to Paris Orly flights over the period January 8 to February 21, 2015. Thereafter, the type will be deployed on its 5x weekly transatlantic services to New York JFK.

Having originally placed its order in 2005, Royal Air Maroc was scheduled to have taken delivery of its first B787 in October 2008 but chose to defer delivery to later airframes when the B787 programme encountered early teething problems. As it stands, the airline's initial two airframes, msn 35507 and 35508, are now destined for fellow African carrier, RwandAir (WB, Kigali), as 9XR-WM and 9XR-WN.

After the cannibalisation of parts of its newest Boeing 777-200LR VT-ALH Maharashtra, it appears national carrier Air India is stripping one its new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, VT-ANI for parts.

VT-ANI, construction number (MSN) 36277 was the 46th 787-8 Dreamliner built. It made its first flight on May 23, 2012 and delivered to Air India and ferried on October 9, 2012. The aircraft was used extensively flying to Australia, London, Frankfurt etc. Suddenly around April 22, 2014 this aircraft mysteriously disappeared from the skies. The world aviation community has been abuzz with the absence of this new aircraft from the skies.

There is little doubt the airline is having a torrid time of its ownership experience with the newest aircraft from Boeing. While the rest of the 787 operators are close to a 99% despatch reliability ratio, statements by the civil aviation ministers to India’s parliament suggest Air India is far behind, with a flight despatch reliability below 97%.

While interchanging parts between aircraft is an accepted norm in the industry, Air India appears to be the only 787 operator in the world that is resorting to this tactic of last resort.

These confidential photos from hangar four at Mumbai airport suggest something sinister is occurring at the airline. Is VT-ANI also being stripped for parts at the financially beleaguered airline just like her Boeing 777-200LR sister VT-ALH was?

We wrote to the senior management of Air India seeking their response. No reply was received. So we are assuming the worst. However, if any reader has more knowledge of the situation, a comment is requested, even anonymously.
