China Southern Airlines to Join Skyteam Cargo in 2010
VANCOUVER - March 9, 2010 - China Southern Airlines, (NYSE:ZNH) (HKSE: 1055) (SHA: 600029) - www.csair.com/global - the newest member of SkyTeam and the largest airline in The People's Republic of China, today announced its plan to join SkyTeam Cargo in 2010. The announcement was made by Mr. Luo Laijun, Senior Vice President Cargo, China Southern Airlines during the 4th IATA Cargo Symposium in Vancouver.

With full membership in SkyTeam Cargo expected before November this year, China Southern Airlines will become the first Chinese carrier to join a global air cargo alliance.

"This move into SkyTeam Cargo exemplifies the vitality of China's air cargo industry, following its passenger transportation business and marks an important step forward towards the internationalization of the Chinese civil aviation industry," said Mr. Luo.

SkyTeam Cargo was founded in 2000 and today is the world's leading air cargo alliance. Since then it has seen exponential growth and now offers customers over 10,000 flights a day to more than 130 countries between seven partners: Aeromexico Cargo, Air France Cargo, Alitalia Cargo, Czech Airlines Cargo, Delta Cargo, KLM Cargo and Korean Air Cargo. Since 2005 SkyTeam Cargo was presented the awards for the Best Air Freight Alliance during the Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards (AFSCA) Ceremony each year.

"Following their initial SkyTeam passenger membership we very much welcome the decision of China Southern Airlines to join the cargo part of the alliance this year. China Southern becomes the eighth member in the cargo alliance and with their largest network in China extending our strategic growth and network cooperation opportunities on offer to our customers," said Air France–KLM Cargo Vice President Alliance and Chairman of SkyTeam Cargo Executive Board Mr. Chong Choy.

China Southern Cargo operates two Boeing 747-400 freighters and two state-of-the-art Boeing 777-200 freighters. By the end of 2011, China Southern Cargo will have expanded its fleet to eight freighters with the introduction of four more Boeing 777-200Fs.

China Southern Cargo offers all-cargo services from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Chicago with plans to launch new inter-continental freighter services from Pudong (or Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport) to Vienna, New York, Dallas and other major destinations across Europe and North America. China Southern Airlines, with the largest fleet and the most extensive network in Mainland China, provides "belly" cargo services that span all of China, radiating throughout Asia and with convenient connections to all major cities in Europe, North America, Australia and Africa.

"Since its passenger membership into the SkyTeam Alliance on November 15, 2007, China Southern Cargo has been working to narrow the gap in all areas between itself and the Alliance. In accordance with SkyTeam's management concepts, management expertise and service standards, China Southern has been vigorously engaged in safety auditing, fleet renewal and expansion, hub network development, product range establishment, service procedure improvement, information reconstruction and product branding," added Mr. Luo.

China Southern's membership into SkyTeam Cargo is part of the Chinese civil aviation industry's strategy of internationalization. Under the climate of deepening globalization, this initiative follows the trend of alliances and liberalization in the global air transportation industry. It reflects the market awareness and business acumen China Southern Cargo has to participate in international cooperation and competition.

SkyTeam Cargo membership for China Southern Airlines will help enhance the international competitiveness of China’s air cargo industry by following world-class standards and accelerating the internalization of the Chinese civil aviation industry.

China Eastern non è mai stato un membro di Star Alliance.

E comunque, la compagnia ha NEGATO di aver fatto dichiarazioni ufficiali circa la sua entrata in Star Alliance..

China Eastern in global alliances airlines talks
(AFP) – 8 hours ago

SHANGHAI — China Eastern Airlines said Tuesday it is in talks with all the three global airline alliances after a French newspaper reported that the carrier is set to join the SkyTeam Alliance.

An agreement on the move was expected to be signed at the end of the week, the French financial newspaper La Tribune reported Tuesday.

"The matter is now in full swing... We are in talks with all the three alliances. The three all offered us favourable policies if we join them," Luo Zhuping, a spokesman for the nation's third largest carrier, told AFP.

But Luo declined to name the preferred partner and another top China Eastern executive, who asked not to be named, told AFP the deal with SkyTeam was advancing and the company would announce its decision in due time.

Shanghai-based China Eastern is the only one of China's top three carriers that is not part of a global industry alliance. The nation's biggest carrier, China Southern Airlines, is already a member of SkyTeam while Air China belongs to the Star Alliance. The third global alliance is Oneworld.

E' dunque necessario rivedere il titolo del 3d.

A dire il vero AvWeek riporta la notizia ancora in modo diverso, ovvero che sia China Eastern che China Airlines, siano pronte per entrare in SkyTeam; la notizia è di poche ore fa...

China Eastern and Taiwan’s China Airlines will join the Skyteam alliance, industry executives say, lifting the chances of Chinese airline consolidation and eliminating Oneworld’s chance of embracing one of the top three mainland carriers,

The choice of Skyteam by China Eastern could become official this week, following consideration of proposals from the three global alliances over the past few months, the industry officials say. Neither China Eastern nor China Airlines has made an official statement, and the Oneworld alliance also has been wooing China Eastern, saying it believes it has made a strong case (DAILY, April 12).

Top managers at China Eastern called a meeting last week to advise senior staff of the decision to go into Skyteam, say three executives from three airlines that are involved in the matter.

The decision means that China Eastern will move closer to Skyteam member China Southern, raising the strong possibility of an eventual merger of the two as they strive to compete with the government’s most favored carrier, Star Alliance member Air China.

Indeed, a desire to consolidate the Chinese airline industry probably explains China Eastern’s choice of Skyteam.

The head of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, Li Jiaxiang, has publicly supported the creation of a Chinese airline that would rank among the world’s largest. That can be done only by consolidation among the three largest carriers, an idea that was opposed by Li’s predecessor, Yang Yuanyuan.

The membership of such a dominant airline from one of the world’s three largest economies would be an enormous asset for Skyteam. The alliance has a member in one of the other big-three economies (Delta in the United States) but not in the third, Japan, thanks to the decision of Japan Airlines in February to stick with Oneworld.

The eventual presence of all three major alliances in China remains a possibility, since the ambitious but politically weak fourth carrier, Hainan Airlines, applied to join Oneworld in 2007. Political clout matters in China when airlines vie for route rights, runway slots and occasional injections of new capital. Oneworld already has Cathay Pacific as a leading member, but the Hong Kong carrier is not allowed to operate an intra-mainland network. Moreover, its cross-shareholdings with Air China have long raised questions about its long-term commitment to Oneworld.

China Eastern Chairman Liu Shaoyong was formerly chairman of China Southern and, according to staff at the airlines, gets along well with his successor at China Southern, Si Xianmin, which should make cooperation easier.

When he was running China Southern, Liu sought cooperation with China Eastern and said he would like to nominate it for membership of Skyteam.

China Eastern announced a strategic cooperation agreement with China Airlines on April 6, encompassing passenger and cargo services, marketing, logistics and maintenance.

Liu says the carriers will extend their cooperation to code sharing.

Another possible shakeup in the Chinese market could be in store with the grounding in March of the small carrier Viva Macau. With just three Boeing 767s, the airline did not have a great effect on the market, but its air operator’s certificate has not yet been canceled and could be a valuable asset for one of the Asia-Pacific region’s franchising budget airlines: AirAsia, based in Malaysia, Tiger Airways from Singapore and Jetstar from Australia.

China Eastern to Join SkyTeam

Alliance moves closer to welcoming second Chinese carrier

SHANGHAI, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- China Eastern Airlines today announced its intention to join the SkyTeam Airline Alliance. During an official ceremony in Shanghai, China Eastern President and Chief Executive Officer Ma Xulun joined the CEOs of SkyTeam member airlines to sign a Memorandum of Understanding confirming China Eastern's plans to join the SkyTeam Alliance by mid-2011. With China Eastern as a partner, SkyTeam passengers will benefit from improved access to SkyTeam's extensive Chinese domestic network.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100416/CL87496LOGO)

China Eastern, headquartered in Shanghai, is situated in the most economically developed region and the fastest growing city of China. The signing ceremony took place at the Xijiao State Guest House in Shanghai, witnessed by Chairman Liu Shaoyong of China Eastern, Chairman of the SkyTeam Governing Board Leo van Wijk and Managing Director of SkyTeam Marie-Joseph Male. Among other witnesses were the Vice Mayor of the Shanghai Municipal Government and representatives of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC).

"Today, China Eastern has taken an important step towards its future growth and the SkyTeam members are honored to be part of this journey," said Leo van Wijk. "I cannot emphasize the importance of China's position in the global economy enough and increasing our network presence in this rapidly growing and dynamic part of the world will bring more benefits to both our members and customers. In our 10th anniversary year, the commitment shown by China Eastern will further strengthen SkyTeam's position as a leading alliance for the future."

"Joining an international airline alliance is China Eastern Airlines' strategic deployment to continuously strengthen core profitability and boost market competitiveness," said Mr. Liu. "For China Eastern Airlines, joining SkyTeam is the just way leading to a globalized market, which will provide wider space for growth. It offers rare opportunities to absorb successful experiences and realize great-leap-forward developments. It provides ideal chances to raise management level, improve operation quality and accelerate the application of information technology.

Maximizing the Chinese, Asian and global network

With the addition of a second Chinese airline, SkyTeam customers worldwide will benefit from greater access to China and Asia Pacific. Servicing more than 150 destinations in China and abroad, China Eastern provides an extensive route network. Current SkyTeam member China Southern already covers China through its hubs in Guangzhou and Beijing. Together with China Eastern and its hub in Shanghai, SkyTeam will be able to offer services out of the three major Chinese markets. China Eastern will bring 25 unique new destinations that will enrich SkyTeam's current network. The China Eastern network also covers Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, South Africa and Australia. Combined with Korean Air, the three Asian carriers will further strengthen SkyTeam's presence in Asia.

China Eastern's growth ambitions reach far beyond Asia. Cooperation with Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico offers great potential in the trans-Pacific and Latin American markets. At the same time, increasing growth figures to and from Europe will be obtained through China Eastern's cooperation with Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, CSA Czech Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Mr. Male shared some more detail about the joining process: "The next step is expected to be taken in June 2010, when China Eastern and SkyTeam will sign an alliance agreement that will lead to the official SkyTeam membership with an effective entry around mid 2011." Also in June, SkyTeam plans to welcome two additional members to the alliance, Vietnam Airlines of Vietnam and TAROM of Romania.
