China Eastern decides to join SkyTeam
By Siva Govindasamy

China Eastern Airlines has chosen SkyTeam as its alliance partner, and plans to formally join the group by mid-2011.
The decision will come as a disappointment to Star Alliance and especially Oneworld, which had wooed the Shanghai-based carrier as well. Air China, the country's flag carrier, is part of Star Alliance. The decision leaves Oneworld without a partner in one of the world's fastest growing airline markets.
When formalised, China Eastern will be the second Chinese carrier in the alliance after Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines. It is uncertain if Star Alliance member Shanghai Airlines, which China Eastern bought this year, will also join SkyTeam as well.
China Eastern and SkyTeam are expected to sign an alliance agreement in June, leading to official membership entry around mid-2011, says SkyTeam.
"Joining an international airline alliance is China Eastern Airlines' strategic deployment to continuously strengthen core profitability and boost market competitiveness," says the carrier's chairman Liu Shaoyong.
"Joining SkyTeam is the just way leading to a globalised market, which will provide wider space for growth. It offers rare opportunities to absorb successful experiences and realise great-leap-forward developments. It provides ideal chances to raise management levels, improve operation quality and accelerate the application of information technology."
Adding China Eastern gives SkyTeam customers access to the entire Chinese market, says the alliance.
"China Southern already covers China through its hubs in Guangzhou and Beijing. Together with China Eastern and its hub in Shanghai, SkyTeam will be able to offer services out of the three major Chinese markets," it adds
China Eastern's cooperation with Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico would give the alliance greater access in the trans-Pacific and Latin American markets, says SkyTeam. Growth to and from Europe will be come through cooperation with Aeroflot, Air France-KLM, Alitalia, and CSA Czech Airlines.
SkyTeam will add Vietnam Airlines and TAROM of Romania as members in June.

Great news per SkyTeam

Oneworld abandons the idea of courting Chinese carriers

By Luc Citrinot, etn (in Berlin) | Jun 11, 2010

Rebuffed by the choice of China Eastern Airlines to finally choose Skyteam over Oneworld, alliance’s CEO John McCulloch puts a –temporary- stop at the alliance’s search for a partner in China. “We are not looking for the time being to any airline in China. And I can confirm that we do not held talks with Hainan Airlines, the last large international carrier in Mainland China”, declared Mr. McCulloch a a press conference during IATA AGM in Berlin.

For months, Oneworld had hoped to be able to attract China Eastern, then seen as a major step to strengthen the alliance. Disappointment was visible as Oneworld thought to have offered to the Shanghai based carrier the best deal. Analysts explain China Eastern’s choic”e of Skyteam by the fact that current China Eastern Chairman Liu Shaoyong has a closer link to China Southern Airlines – alrady a member of Skyteam- as he used to be his CEO until last year.

“We already have a strong presence in China thanks to Cathay Pacific and its affiliate Dragonair. Hong Kong is probably China’s best hub thanks to its efficient connections. And Cathay Pacific is recognised as one of the best airlines in the world”, told McCulloch. If Hong Kong is indeed a strong hub to China, its location in the South of Mainland China would have been ideally complemented by another gateway more to the North of the country. Asked if eventually Cathay Pacific could open a second hub in Mainland China, Anthony Tyler, CEO of Cathay Pacific replies: “We do not have the legal possibility to proceed in this direction. And I think that we do offer in Hong Kong an efficient hub able to compete with other large airports in China."

Asked last yearabout enlargement’s perspectives at IATA AGM in Kuala Lumpur, Mc Culloch declared then that BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) were the absolute priority to the alliance’s expansion with China and India being the focus. With Russia’s S7 being now part of Oneworld and the official announcement that Kingfisher Airlines (India) would join the alliance by next year, Oneworld’s mission is half accomplished. “We now concentrate our efforts on Brazil. This is our next target as it represents a huge market. We already have a dominant position in Latin America and Brazil fits perfectly to our strategy to remain the largest alliance in this part of the world", says McCulloch. Oneworld is still not interested by Southeast Asia but still has regular discussions with a number of airlines including Malaysia Airlines. "Now that our business is turning good again, we are now at the stage of looking more seriously at joining an alliance. And of course, Oneworld or Skyteam are the two alliances we feel interested to join", says Tengku Azmil Aziz, Malaysia Airlines CEO.

Shanghai Airlines withdraws from Star, set to join SkyTeam with China Eastern

By Katie Cantle | November 2, 2010

China Eastern Airlines said that its wholly owned subsidiary Shanghai Airlines has withdrawn from the Star Alliance to join SkyTeam along with CEA next year.

CEA signed a formal agreement with SkyTeam in June and is scheduled to gain membership in 2011. Shanghai's departure had been expected after it agreed to merge with CEA. SAL's network will add 32 destinations to the grouping's network.

SkyTeam MD Marie-Joseph Male said, "The addition of the combined networks of China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines gives new opportunities for SkyTeam customers to access cities in all regions of China using Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao airports." CEA acquired SAL last year.
SkyTeam also counts China Southern Airlines as a member. China Airlines, based in Taipei, is additionally expected to join the alliance in 2011 (ATW Daily News, Sept. 15).

Without SAL, Star's only Chinese member is Air China. Oneworld has no mainland Chinese participants but Hong Kong-based Cathy Pacific is a member.

Shanghai Airlines To Become Part of SkyTeam
