Egyptian air traffic control lost contact with a civilian airliner carrying 212 people shortly after it took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to head to Russia, aviation sources said on Saturday.
The sources said the passenger plane was mainly carrying Russian tourists and that a search was underway.
Security sources in the Sinai Peninsula confirmed reports that an aircraft was missing.

Reuters reported that the plane was heading from Sharm el-Sheikh to Russia, and was carrying 212 passengers. Ambulance vehicles headed to the accident site, Youm7 reported.
Prime Minister Sherif Ismail has cancelled his scheduled visit to Ismailia city after a civilian plane fall in Sinai, a source of Ismailia governorate told Youm7 Saturday.

Egypt's air accident chief said on Saturday that a missing passenger plane on its way to Russia had safely left Egyptian airspace and made contact with Turkish air traffic control.
"The ... Russian airline had told us that the Russian plane we lost contact with is safe and that it has contacted Turkish air traffic control and is passing through Turkish skies now," Ayman al-Muqaddam, the head of the central air traffic accident authority in Egypt, said in a statement.

Su FR24 non risulta attualmente nessun aeromobile Metrojet in volo.

IL CAIRO. Paura, giallo per alcuni minuti con notizie contraddittorie, poi l'annuncio dell'agenzia russa Tass e a ruota la conferma del governo egiziano: è precipitato sul Sinai l'aereo russo con 224 passeggeri a bordo del quale si erano perse le tracce intorno alle 8 del mattino dopo il decollo dalla località sul Mar Rosso di Sharm el-Sheikh. Il volo era diretto a San Pietroburgo.
