Overweight 787s Prompt Air India to Ask for Compensation

Air India
Ltd. said it’s demanding compensation from Boeing Co. for delivering 787 Dreamliner aircraft that don’t meet promised fuel-efficiency targets because the planes are heavier than planned.

Design changes made after targets were set meant some 787s are heavier than required, Air India Chairman Rohit Nandan said in an interview in Doha, Qatar. The national carrier and the planemaker are negotiating a formula for compensation, which may be finalized after the 18th Dreamliner is delivered to the Mumbai-based carrier, he said.

In February, Boeing said Air India was not happy with the reliability of the aircraft and the planemaker was upgrading software and changing components on some planes owned by the flag carrier whenever they could be taken out of service. The model has experienced a series of malfunctions since commercial debut 3 1/2 years late in 2011, including a three-month grounding of the global fleet last year after battery meltdowns.

“The worst part is over,” Nandan said. “The initial ones did have some difficulty of engineering, in terms of service, but I think they have all been upgraded now.”

The 787-9 variant of the Dreamliner can seat as many as 280 passengers and the twin-aisle plane has a range of 15,372 kilometers, according to Boeing’s website. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 250,836 kilograms.

Boeing (BA)
was struggling to find buyers for 11 of its earliest 787 Dreamliners valued at $1.1 billion after two airlines dropped orders for the holdover models from the jet’s troubled birth, people briefed on the plans had said earlier.

The early Dreamliners are known in the industry as the “terrible teens,” a nod to their place in the assembly-line order and the factory woes. The teens weigh more than other 787s due to custom-fitted reinforcements and needed the most work among the more 60 early Dreamliners that required post-assembly modifications.

Unprofitable Air India ordered 27 Dreamliners on the promise of a more fuel-efficient operation. The Indian carrier has sparred with Boeing over compensation for tardy deliveries.

Besides fuel efficiency, Air India had to face other issues with the 787s. The company had experienced 136 snags with the plane as of November last year, India’s aviation ministry said previously. One of its plane was diverted to Kuala Lumpur in February as a precaution because of a software fault. In other incidents, some windshields cracked, the Times of India reported last month.

“For the last few months, we have no problems with them,” Nandan said, referring to the 787. “An occasional problem can happen to any aircraft. There’s nothing specific, there’s no pattern as well.”

[h=2]Thai unveils B787 business cabin[/h]Thai Airways has offered passengers a sneak peek of the business class seat offering on its upcoming B787-8 Dreamliner.
The new seat design was showcased in a photo on the airline's Instagram account.
At first glance, the look of the seat seems to share some distinct similarities with United Airlines' B787 (and select B777) shell design business seats.

Preview: Thai Airways unveiled its B787 business class product on Instagram
Both also share a 2-2-2 abreast configuration. But, as expected, Thai's seats are velvet purple as opposed to the blue-ish seats by United.
Thai's Dreamliner will offer 264 seats in a two-class configuration, with 24 in Royal Silk (business), and 240 in economy.
The business class product comes with a 60-inch pitch and 21-inch width, and is able to recline into a fully-flat bed. There is also a 16-inch personal screen.

United's B787 business seat
No word yet on Thai's B787 economy product, but the airline has stated that it will be arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration, and offer a 32-inch pitch and 18-inch width.
In true Thai style, the seats will be gold and purple in colour.

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner earns FAA and EASA certification

Boeing started its flight-test program with the 787-9′s first flight in September, 2013.

To earn certification for the 787-9, Boeing undertook a comprehensive test program with five airplanes and more than 1,500 hours of flight testing, plus ground and laboratory testing. Following the rigorous and thorough certification process, the FAA and EASA each granted Boeing an Amended Type Certificate for the 787-9, certifying that the design complies with aviation regulations and is safe and reliable.

The FAA also has granted Boeing an Amended Production Certificate, validating that the Boeing production system can produce 787-9s that conform to the design. EASA accepts FAA oversight of Boeing production certificates, just as the FAA accepts EASA oversight of European manufacturers’ production certificates.

The new 787-9 Dreamliner will complement and extend the super-efficient 787 family. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 will fly more passengers and more cargo farther with the same exceptional environmental performance — 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than similarly sized airplanes. The 787-9 leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering passengers features such as large windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride.

Twenty-six customers around the world have ordered 413 787-9s, accounting for 40 percent of all 787 orders.
