Airbus poised to start building new higher weight A380 variant
By Max Kingsley-Jones

Airbus is about to begin production of an upgraded A380-800 with increased operating weights that will offer more range and payload capability when it enters service with launch customer British Airways in 2013.
The new version features a 4t increase in maximum take-off weight to 573t and an additional 190km (100nm) range that will enable it to fly distances of 15,360km on MTOW-limited missions. Maximum landing weight and maximum zero fuel weight have also each increased by 2t, and structural payload capability rises by 1.5t on MZFW-limited missions.
"Because we understand design cycles much better now, we are able to further optimise the performance," says Airbus's executive vice-president programmes Tom Williams.

Full-scale fatigue testing of the A380 has passed 45,000 cycles, which Williams say is 2.4 times the original design service goal or "aircraft life", and testing is continuing to beyond 2.5 design service goals.
To achieve the operating weight increases the airframe structure has been strengthened, which will become standard on aircraft delivered from 2013, although the higher operating weights will be offered as an option. According to Williams the increases are made possible through reductions in flight loads, which are partly achieved by the optimisation of the fly-by-wire control laws.
This new A380 build standard will be introduced later this year when assembly begins of the first wings at Airbus's Broughton, UK plant, and these will also incorporate a 1.5° increase in twist to further optimise aerodynamics as part of the improvement package. Airbus says that the upgrade does not require any thrust bumps, and is not capable of retrofit to earlier build aircraft.
BA is due to be the launch operator for the improved A380, when its first Rolls-Royce Trent 900-powered aircraft is delivered in 2013. Airbus executives previously disclosed that the weight and performance gain came from a requirement for a couple of customers during sales campaigns against the Boeing 747-8I.
Meanwhile as Airbus prepares to deliver the first A380 to the fifth customer, Lufthansa, subassemblies for the initial batch of aircraft for the sixth customer, Korean Air, have been delivered to the final assembly line in Toulouse. Delivery is scheduled for the second quarter of 2011.

Notizia fasulla, prego ignorare.

April 6, 2011

THAI Outlines Initial A380 Information & 747 Retrofit; Potential Scandinavia service increase

At separate events within 2 weeks, THAI’s Traffic Planning Department at RoutesAsia (Seoul Incheon, 27MAR11-29MAR11) and the airline’s chief at Aircraft Interiors Expo (Hamburg, 06APR11) both outlined planned Boeing 747-400 re-configuration and Airbus A380 Operation and configuration.

According to the Star Alliance member, 12 Boeing 747-400 will under-go retrofit project, which is already progressively in effect. 6 of 12 frames will see retrofit in Economy Class only, featuring the new AVOD Personal Entertainment system. TG’s 747 fleet does not have Personal Entertainment System on Economy Class. First retrofitted Boeing 747 is to enter service by the end of April 2011.

The retrofit of Boeing 747-400 aircraft, which mainly operates to Europe, will be similar to the product that the Star member plans to introduce on Airbus A380. First 3 of 6 Airbus A380 aircraft, in F12C60Y435 configuration, is due to arrive September 2012, and will inaugurate service to Frankfurt due to slot constraint, followed by London Heathrow and Paris CDG.

On A380, First and Business Class are located on the upper deck. Business Class in particular features full lie-flat seats. Economy Class are located on the lower deck with AVOD system.

Airbus watching A380 schedule closely after quake
By David Kaminski-Morrow

Airbus is confident it will meet its delivery forecast of some 25 A380s this year despite the Japanese earthquake which has further complicated the juggling process aimed at ensuring enough Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines are available.
Turbine parts for the Trent 900 for the A380 - as well as the Trent 700 and other aero engines - are produced at Japanese corporation IHI's Soma plant.
Soma is just 40km north of the Fukushima nuclear power station which has been the scene of emergency containment and repair work since the 11 March quake and tsunami.
IHI shut down the main manufacturing facilities after the earthquake and only began partial operations within the least-damaged buildings on 29 March.
"We are now undertaking repairs on the other buildings and will commence operations at each of them as soon as such work has been completed," it says.
Airbus executive vice-president for programmes Tom Williams, speaking to Flightglobal in Toulouse last week, said there were "certainly concerns" over the ability of the plant to restore normal operations.
"That's the one we're going to have to watch carefully," he says, pointing out that power has been intermittent and that a smooth operation depends on making sure the "right people are there at the right time".

Airbus has been forced to rejig the schedule of its A380 deliveries after a Trent 900 in-flight failure, on a Qantas aircraft last year, resulted in demand for replacement powerplants.
In order to meet the demand Airbus has been removing Trent 900s from the production line, and pushing A380 deliveries towards the second half of this year.
But Williams says Rolls-Royce has been working on contingency plans and the airframer is maintaining "at the moment" that its A380 delivery total will be in the "mid-20s" for 2011.
Airbus delivered four A380s over the first quarter of this year: two to Qantas in January, bringing its total to nine, and two to Lufthansa in March giving the German carrier six. Both airlines' A380s have Trent 900 engines.

Exclusive: Airbus grants exception to permit Koito seats on SIA A380s
By Mary Kirby

Airbus has granted an exceptional authorization to allow the installation of business class seats from Koito Industries on Singapore Airlines' delayed Airbus A380 aircraft, despite the embattled Japanese manufacturer's admitted falsification of data on some 150,000 seats in the world fleet, ATI and Flightglobal has learned.
A new exceptional authorization issued by the European airframer accepts under Airbus production organization approval (POA) Koito-made business class seats for SIA's 12th A380, MSN058, although comments from SIA suggest the carrier intends to have Koito seats installed on at least three delayed A380s.
"We have three A380 deliveries coming up in the next few months and the priority has been on working with Airbus and Koito to meet certification requirements for the business class seats," a SIA spokesman confirms.
Airbus' exceptional authorization is understood to have been issued with a number of stipulations, including EASA approval prior to delivery.
It comes some 19 months after Airbus POA for Koito was pulled, meaning Koito "cannot produce seat or seat parts for airborne use", Airbus said in a previous telex on the matter.
Early last year Koito made the stunning revelation that it falsified safety test results on as many as 150,000 seats on 1,000 aircraft used by 32 carriers. Evidence from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) highlighted three areas where Koito fabricated results - 16g and 9g test data and flammability data. Multiple sources say Koito used its own rubber stamp to falsely indicate that some seats had cleared tests by the JCAB. The debacle has caused aircraft delivery delays at both Airbus and Boeing.
Later in 2010 EASA and the US FAA issued proposed airworthiness directives, with the European agency taking a harder line than its US counterpart, although its proposal did not cover the A380.
To date, SIA has taken delivery of 11 A380s. Delivery of SIA's 11th A380 was delayed due to problems with Koito seats. The carrier had expected to receive its 12th and 13th A380s in the fourth quarter of 2010 and its 14th A380 in the first quarter of 2011.
The SIA spokesman says the delay of SIA's A380s is "only related to seats".
Airbus could not provide immediate comment.
