easyJet chief Johan Lundgren cuts pay to match predecessor

EasyJet's chief executive Johan Lundgren is reducing his salary by £34,000 to match that of his predecessor Carolyn McCall.
Mr Lundgren's starting annual salary was £740,000, while Ms McCall was on £706,000 when she left the budget airline in November.
He was previously a deputy chief executive at travel group Tui.
EasyJet was "absolutely committed" to giving equal pay and equal opportunity for women and men, said Mr Lundgren.
"To show my personal commitment I have asked the board to reduce my pay to match that of Carolyn's when she was at EasyJet," he added.
"I also want to affirm my own commitment to address the gender imbalance in our pilot community which drives our overall gender pay gap."

Female pilots

The gender pay gap in EasyJet is currently 51.7%, but the budget airline says this is not because of unequal pay for women.
Salaries for pilots and cabin crew are collectively agreed with unions and both men and women are paid the same.
The gender pay gap comes in because there are far fewer female pilots than male pilots in the industry as a whole - only 4% of commercial pilots are women, and only 5% of EasyJet's pilots are women.
The budget carrier has set a target that 20% of new pilots should be female by 2020, up from 6% in 2015.
Earlier this month, EasyJet reported a 14.4% jump in revenues to £1.1bn for the three months to 31 December, with passenger numbers up 8% to 18.8 million in the period.

easyJet reports rise in January passenger numbers

easyJet has posted its January passenger numbers, showing a 8.7% increase year on year.
The budget airline carried 5,159,860 passengers last month, up from 4,745,630 in January 2017.
Its load factor also improved by 2.2%, raising from 86.2% to 88.4%.
Passenger numbers, rolling for the last 12 months, were up 9.5% to 82,048,573 from 74,921,296 with an increased load factor of 93.2%, up from 91.5%.
easyJet says its passenger numbers are in line with expectations, and that it will release further details in its half year results on May 15.

U2 apre anche Venezia-Belfast, la rotta sara' annuale (2xw) e parte il 22 giugno.

easyJet announces Belfast to Venice flights

Easyjet has announced a new route from Belfast to Venice which will launch this summer.

Flights from Belfast International Airport to the popular Italian city will take off from June 22 2018.
The service will operate twice a week throughout the year.
Fares will be starting from £27.71 and are on sale now.
Venice is the second Italian destination added to easyJet’s Belfast network in as many months, following the launch of a route to Naples in December 2017.
Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager said: “We’re delighted to announce that even more new destinations will be available for our Northern Irish customers.
"We’re putting flights to Venice on sale today, allowing our customers to book early and take advantage of our lowest fares.
Graham Keddie, from Belfast International Airport added: “Statistics indicate that Italy is a massively underserved market from Belfast, but we are taking significant steps to address this issue, with the addition of Venice joining services to Milan, Naples and Verona.
"Year-round flights to Venice are certain to be popular for city breaks, cruise-ship connections and even ski in winter, not to mention opening up the potential for increased Italian tourism into Northern Ireland.”

easyJet extends ‘Worldwide by easyJet’ to seven airports and adds new connections airline partners

#
easyJet will add Berlin Tegel, Amsterdam Schiphol, Venice Marco Polo, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Orly, Edinburgh and Inverness to its ‘Worldwide by easyJet connections’ product

# New connecting airline partners have also been announced - Thomas Cook Airlines, Corsair, La Compagnie and Loganair

# 53 million easyJet customers will be able to connect to other airlines’ or to easyJet flights

easyJet, Europe's leading airline, has today announced that it is extending its ‘Worldwide by easyJet’ connections platform to Berlin Tegel, Venice Marco Polo, Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Orly and Edinburgh airports. This means that, combined with the connections already announced through London Gatwick and Milan Malpensa, over half of the airline’s flights – and 53 million easyJet customers a year - will be able to connect to airline partner services and other easyJet flights in a single booking through easyJet’s digital booking portal.

easyJet has also brought new connecting airlines onto the ‘Worldwide by easyJet’ booking platform and has today also announced partnerships with Thomas Cook Airlines at Gatwick meaning easyJet customers can now travel as far as the Caribbean or to the USA, Africa and the Indian Ocean with La Compagnie and Corsair who will both fly from Paris Orly.

easyJet’s existing relationship with WestJet and Norwegian will enable the airlines to offer long haul connectivity at more of Europe’s biggest hub airports – Norwegian will extend connecting services from Paris Charles De Gaulle and Paris Orly in the coming weeks, from Amsterdam Schiphol in the summer when the airline launches its service to New York from the Dutch capital and also from Edinburgh. Meanwhile easyJet’s existing relationship with Loganair will allow easyJet customers to connect to the highlands and Islands via Edinburgh.

Johan Lundgren, easyJet CEO, commented:

“We are pleased to announce that we will be extending our ‘Worldwide by easyJet’ connections platform to Berlin Tegel from summer 2018 onwards. The addition of Tegel, alongside other key airports in the network, means that 53 million easyJet customers will be able to connect to other airlines’ or to easyJet flights. We have been delighted with the appetite of partner airports and airlines to expand Worldwide across our network allowing us to access a greater range of passengers flying across Europe.

“Because of easyJet’s reputation for great customer service and our strong positions at Europe’s leading airports, long haul carriers as well as airports have been asking to work with easyJet for some time.

“easyJet will sign up other airlines to Worldwide by easyJet throughout 2018, with talks already far advanced with middle and far-eastern carriers amongst others and we also plan to expand to other easyJet airports across Europe.”

Christoph Debus, Chief Airlines Officer at Thomas Cook Airlines commented:

“Across our Group Airline, we have increased summer 2018 capacity by more than 10 per cent. We have added an aircraft at London Gatwick, increasing capacity at the airport by 12% this summer in order to meet customer demand. We are thrilled that our new partnership with Worldwide by easyJet allows us to offer our customers even more choice and convenience.”

Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Berlin Brandenburg Airport GmbH, commented:

“Adding the ‘Worldwide by easyJet’ connections platform to Berlin-Tegel airport is another important network connection for the metropolitan region of Berlin. This strategic partnership is not only a strong signal today but underlines easyJet´s great commitment to continue to work closely with us. Such an engagement coming from one of the biggest European airlines emphasizes that Berlin is an attractive market for the aviation industry and will become even more attractive with the BER in the future. Especially considering the recent developments we are very happy about this.”

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive, Edinburgh Airport, said:

“Our focus, as always, is to deliver our passengers choice. We’re therefore delighted to be included in Worldwide by easyJet as it does just that. By integrating with other partner carriers, passengers travelling to and from Edinburgh will now have more choice than ever.”

Inverness Airport General Manager Graeme Bell, said:

“Worldwide by easyJet at Inverness further increases connectivity for passengers in the Highlands and Islands. By partnering with Thomas Cook Airlines easyJet opens more leisure market destinations via London Gatwick. The addition of Loganair as an airline partner is especially welcome for passengers travelling from the islands and onwards to Gatwick.”

Jonathan Hinkles, Loganair MD commented:

“Now that easyJet is extending its connecting capability to Edinburgh and Inverness it makes perfect sense for Loganair to take the next step in providing customers with the enhanced benefit of the self-transfer product. It will, undoubtedly, provide more choice for our customers and paves the way for the development of a full self-connect product at a later stage.”

Julien Houdebine, VP Network, Alliances and Revenues at Corsair comments :

“We are very enthusiastic about this collaboration in Paris-Orly with easyJet as part of the ‘Worldwide’ project. Being able to connect our long-haul flights to the easyJet network, to Europe and the French province is a great opportunity for our customers. The connection demand is very strong to all areas of our network: Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Africa and Canada. Now that the first step is over as our direct flights are open for sale on the easyJet platforms, we are ready to move to the second step, by offering the connectivity between our networks”

Jean Charles Périno, EVP Commercial and Marketing for La Compagnie, commented:

“La Compagnie has created a unique position between Paris and New York with its low fare, all-business class experience. It already goes beyond Paris and New York since self-connectors are growing: partnering easyJet is a great accelerator for La Compagnie to reach new customers beyond Paris. We are very proud to be working with easyJet on this ambitious program.”

Worldwide by easyJet explained

‘Worldwide by easyJet’ is the first global airline connections service by a European low fares airline. Legacy airlines have traditionally offered connectivity through costly and complex interline and codeshare agreements and procedures. With Worldwide by easyJet these will be replicated by self-connect and sales partnerships through a digital, virtual hub which will offer the same sort of connectivity but more simply and efficiently.

easyJet has leadership positions at more of Europe’s major airports and flies on more of Europe’s 100 largest routes than any other airline which makes it the most attractive European short haul airline partner. The introduction of this disruptive product opens up new 70m market segment for easyJet.

All of this connectivity has been enabled by technology partner Dohop whose innovative platform allows easyJet customers to book connections and forward flights on easyJet.com. Worldwide by easyJet will also allow easyJet passengers to connect with other easyJet flights through partner airports.

Worldwide by easyJet does not impact easyJet’s punctuality, its asset utilisation or operating model. The airline will not hold flights for connecting passengers. Worldwide by easyJet is subject to a 2 hour 30 minute ‘Minimum Connection Time’, which will give customers plenty of time to transfer between flights and/or terminals. Should a passenger miss a connecting flight they will be transferred to the next available flight.

In alcuni articoli emergono anche altri dettagli in più. Pare che ad oggi la combinazione che ha utilizzato maggiormente il "Worldwide by U2" sia stata la FCO-(LGW)-ORD, anche se non si forniscono numeri in termini assoluti.

Previously connecting flights were only available on its Worldwide platform via London Gatwick.

Currently the most popular route using the Worldwide product is between Rome and Chicago, with travellers flying to Gatwick on easyJet, then onto Chicago with Norwegian. Tickets cost from about 150 pounds in total.

Former EasyJet chief warns of complacency among low-cost carriers

A period of good economic conditions has led to complacency among low-cost carriers that is ripe for a "correction", in the view of former EasyJet chief executive Ray Webster.

Speaking at the Routes Europe conference in Bilbao today, Webster – who was chief executive of EasyJet between 1996 and 2006 – said that the outlook for low-cost airlines was "quite worrying" as they were unprepared for future economic shocks.
A period of "very good" economic conditions has been punctuated by the lack of a "serious downturn or runaway fuel prices", he states.

As a result, carriers have not been put under "pressure" and so have "incrementally added costs" and lost efficiencies over time, while not experiencing the typical "peaks and troughs" of the market.
"We have been through that in the past but I think some of those lessons have been forgotten," he warns.
Webster forecasts that oil producers in particular could raise prices, which would have a "dramatic" impact on airline bottom lines.
Commenting on a possible takeover bid for Norwegian by IAG, meanwhile, Webster suggests the two companies must ensure there is "direct compatibility" between their business models and cultures.
"If you don’t get the two of those right, I wouldn’t do it," he says, adding that integration can lead to "loss of control over the business".
Webster states that at its inception EasyJet benefited from being the "right idea at the right time" as the European airline industry was being deregulated. The UK carrier also had "first mover advantage", which allowed it to grow quickly.
He reveals that the first "issue" he had to deal with when he took the helm at EasyJet was owner Stelios Haji-Ioannou's tendency to "manually" price tickets.
"In the early days we were pricing manually – he would have a look at the flights several times in the morning [and] several times in the afternoon," Webster recalls, adding: "If he thought one flight wasn't selling quickly enough he would drop the price."
After convincing Haji-Ioannou to give him control of pricing, Webster says he wrote a programme to automatically set fares. "That was the start of our automation," he adds.
In the early years, EasyJet took a "trial and error approach" to route development as there was no "textbook" on how a low-cost carrier should grow its network at that time.

Which airlines offer the best value on short-haul flights?

Monday, 30 April 2018

FacebookTwitterEmail AppPinterestWhatsAppMore

Just how cheap is a cheap flight? Often there’s more to consider than the basic ticket price. Baggage charges, seat reservations and on-board catering can all add to the total cost. So we’ve rated the 20 most popular airlines flying short-haul from the UK in four key categories – with surprising results.

And the winner is...

Each of the 20 airlines1 was ranked in four areas: baggage charges (per kg), the price of a seat reservation, the cost of on-board catering and the average price of a flight. The airlines were then scored on each category, and the total points scored were added up.

As a result, our Best Value Airline for Short Haul in 2018 is easyJet, followed in second place by Eurowings.

But our top ten isn’t dominated by the low-cost carriers. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. KLM and SWISS are in joint 3rd place, Lufthansa comes in 6th, and British Airways is in joint 8th position.

It’s proof of something frequent flyers have long known. If you’ve got a suitcase to check into the hold, and want a range of other services on your flight, you need to look beyond the basic price of your ticket. Once all the extras have been added up, a bargain price might not be so tempting after all.

However, not everyone wants to buy all the items we’ve considered – and our survey shows that different airlines have done well in each of the four categories. To help you find the best carrier to suit your individual needs, here's a breakdown of the results.

Eurowings is best value for baggage charges

In a recent Twitter survey2, 32% of travellers said baggage charges were the most annoying additional cost on budget flights. This is one of the categories in which traditional airlines do well. It’s headed by Eurowings, but Iberia, BA, Lufthansa, SWISS and TAP Portugal are all close behind.

Many airlines offer value packages, which for a higher flight price include charges for checked-in baggage. With the price of a checked-in suitcase topping £50 return on some short-haul routes, these are worth considering if you’re taking more than a carry-on bag.

Blue Air has the best seat reservation prices

Seat allocation has been a hot topic of debate lately, with some airlines changing their price structure. What’s more, over half (54%)2 of those surveyed by Skyscanner cited seat allocation as one of the added extras that most annoyed them when booking flights. Blue Air came out on top for offering the cheapest seat allocation price, followed by Vueling Airlines and easyJet. Once again, we suggest looking at an airline’s “value added” flight bundles if seat allocation is important – especially if you’re checking a suitcase into the hold (both items are usually included in the package).

Hungry? Several airlines still offer free food

Not everyone has the time to eat before they fly, or wants to stuff their carry-on bag with sandwiches. If that sounds like you, include KLM, Lufthansa, Air France, TAP Portugal and SWISS in your calculations. All offer complementary on-board catering. Amongst those who charge for their on-board food, British Airways came out on top for value, followed by Jet2.

Ryanair offers the lowest average flight prices

If you really are a no-frills flyer – if you don’t want on-board catering, don’t mind where you sit and only have one carry-on bag – then you only have one question to ask: how much is the basic price of your ticket? When it comes to average flight prices, Ryanair topped our survey.

Best value average flight prices6RankingAirportAverage Return Economy Flight Price
1 Ryanair £90.67

2 easyJet £121.52

3 Flybe £128.56

7 Aer Lingus £151.80

8 Blue Air £155.62

9 Eurowings £161.52

10 TUI Airways £162.00

But do bear one final factor in mind when working out your costs: airport charges. Parking, drop-off charges, fast-track check-in and airport lounges can all add significantly to the final cost of flying - and airports tend to charge different prices. Check out our guide to Britain’s best-value airports to find out which are the cheapest.
