A Meridiana Boeing 767-200, registration I-AIGH performing flight I-3811 from Mauritius (Mauritius) to Rome Fiumicino (Italy), was climbing out of Mauritius about 70nm north of Mauritius when the crew declared emergency reporting they had shut down one engine (CF6) and they wanted to return to Mauritius. During the return the aircraft deviated around weather and entered a hold due to weather (low visibility) at Mauritius. The crew reported they had everything under control, they did have a high temperature and fumes on the engine, the emergency was cancelled. The crew advised they would be landing at a higher than normal speed due to high landing weight. After landing the crew reported they saw smoke from the left main gear, they had landed at a higher than normal speed due to high landing weight. Emergency services cooled down the brakes.
The passengers were taken to hotels and rebooked onto other flights the following day, a number were routed via Dubai (United Arab Emirates), a number via Milan Malpensa (Italy).
The occurrence aircraft is still in Mauritius 10 days later awaiting an engine change.
